Starting out HTML & CSS

Programming

I started out as a junior art director in an agency in Brazil (Comunicata Comunicação). Back then I didn’t know much about art for the web. I was more interested in art for print media or television. While helping out a friend with a small print job, he asked if I knew how to make a website. For some reason I said “Yeah!! Sure!!!” and then ran to getting information on how to actually build a website. I ended up doing a course which, to tell you the truth, sucked. But at least it opened my eyes to what I needed to learn.

Like most of the people I know who work with the web, I started to study deeper into programming by myself. After having learned how to use DreamWeaver to build a site, I decided to learn hard-coding HTML so I could do even more complex sites and functionalities . And of course, with HTML came CSS and later on a bit of javascript and PHP. Actionscript was a language I didn’t really need but, since I live flash sites, I decided to learn anyway. Most of what I learned of HTML, CSS and Actionscript came from a couple of books I bought, but most of what I now know are from reading tutorials on the web. Therefore, below I’ve listed a couple of sites I used to learn and some that I still use to improve what I already know when it comes to programming.

HTML.net

I used this site to learn the basics of HTML and CSS. It helped me grasp a couple of concepts I did not fully understand. Visit the website

W3Schools

Another site I used to learn more about programming. Here you can find guides on many different programming languages. Visit the website

WordPress

This is where I go for when I need help with wordpress issues. Visit the website

Apart from the WordPress site, the other two are very basic and I used them only to get started with HTML and CSS, and a bit of other languages too. Now-a-days I usually checkout some of the blogs I’ve shared on the previous post to find out new techniques and tricks for programming, mainly Smashing Mag and Noupe. I still prefer reading books on programming because I tire very easy to read from the computer screen, specially after working all day in front of it.
